little shannon.?

when little madaline went missing last year, it was the first item on every news broadcast for months, her parents were taken to see the pope, had a massive fund set up for her to keep her family in potugul and going round the world on a lear jet. Yet this little girl shannon is missing for a week, and she only just about makes it into the second half of the news, is this because her parents are not high profile professionals.
it does not seem fair to me.

Its the difference between Middle Class and Working Class. They care less for the latter...

No, it is because she is 9 and family has reported that she stated that she wanted to run away. Now in all probability she has met with foul play, her age and ability to walk away on her own changes things somewhat.

The other big difference is that Shannon is here and so there is a presumption that the police are doing everything in their power. Madaline was in a foreign country which makes the story more "exotic" and provides titillation as the press can brand the police/officials incompetent.

There is also the fact that Madeline's family courted the press. Shannon's family don't seem to be doing so. If they pressed for appeals and went to the press for help, they may have increased coverage. The press also had a field day with blaming the parents, which provided a lot of coverage. Hopefully Shannon's family will NOT have that sort of coverage.

No matter what, I hope that both girls are found safe and sound.

Best wishes

Children go missing all the time and we have heard of two of them in the last six months...

I think the difference is that Madaline was taken abroad, from inside her room and the parents were suspects... it gives it a lot more drama which makes good TV.

Shannon disappeared from the street, there are no suspects, no nothing... so people get tired of it quickly.

Sad, but true. Most people couldn't care less about the girls being missing, they care about the drama and mystery and suspense...

it's so true everyone should get treated equally but it's not so. Look at all the people like paris hilton who get a slap on the hand for bad driving lisences and get off easy with dwi and drugs. Lindsay lohan got a slap on the wrist for cocaine posession. It sucks!! My heart and prayers go out to shannons family.

It isn't fair and I totally agree. Some children who go missing don't even make it onto thee news at all!

I think Madeline might have got more publicity on the TV though because it happened abroad, and also the situation that occured...which was that her parents left them on their own.

I know what you mean. I thought it was a case of being outraged at the way the Portugese handled the Madelaine case because the Portugese way was not the British way.

I hope in both cases that the girls are reunited with their parents.

The reality is, high or low profile makes no difference.
