Question:
Who is the asshole?
2020-02-03 15:39:39 UTC
So at my company we are allowed several vacation days that we can take whenever we want and even split them (half days) as long as we notify them timely.
I wrote on the vacation sheet to my boss since a month ago I was going to take half a day off today. She told me no problem.
Today I write her an email to remind her I would be leaving at noon because I have my dentist appointment, to which she replies it's ok but in the future to book the appointments either early in the morning or late in the afternoon (I'm a 36yo woman, not my first job :S)
I got upset because it's my vacation day so I whatever I do with it is not her business, but I was perhaps stupid to mention I had a dentist appointment and then I got lectured.
My question is, am I the asshole or is she?

Doesn't really matter who's the a**hole as the boss is always right in employment situations, for better or worse.

She might be getting confused between you taking a half day vacation, and you taking time out to go to the dentist. Just remind her that you had booked it as a half day vacation, she probably misunderstood/forgot/didn't check your vacation sheet, no point getting mad about it

I think your manager probably forgot, so if that is the case, neither of you are assholes... But Definitely you're not...

That being said, 36 is pretty old to have not entertained the idea that they didn't double check whatever vacation sheet before writing back to you... and instead of considering that possibility - a very logical one - you decided to vent to Yahoo Answers?...

That being said, I hope your dentist appointment went well; peace out.

Kind of normal for bosses to talk about when to book appointments,, and use time..I understand the principal,,but she's just doing her job....Never tell anyone what you are doing when you are off just say sick,,,that's enough for any ***.&&&...they can be difficult.

If you're supposed to be allowed to take a half day of vacation, and it was approved, then i don't know what your boss's problem is. Maybe she forgot your 1/2 day off was approved before hand. Maybe talk to her about it.

I bet if she had a dentist appointment, she'd go, regardless of what time it was.

Maybe from your email she didn't understand you to mean you were using vacation time but were just taking some time, like off the books or sick leave or whatever. But, yeah, if you're taking vacation time, don't ever say what it's for. It's nobody's business. Your email would've been better put as, "Just a friendly reminder that I have a half-day of vacation scheduled this afternoon, so I'll be leaving at noon," or something along those lines.

Shes the asshole. Kindly remind her of the deal and just assume she forgot it. Extend the hand of friendshit. And if she slaps it away, get physical. Tie her to a stake and burn her. WITCH!!!

Just explain to her that it's your vacation day, and then she will probably

remember. Neither one of you is an asshole.

Your mistake was telling her about your appointment. You only need to remind her that you are taking the 'approved' half-day vacation.

Your boss is giving you some friendly advice.   If you'd book your appointments early in the morning or late afternoon, you could avoid having to waste a vacation day.  What's wrong with that?

You should have mentioned that you're taking a day off for some personal work.

That's all. You went into details unnecessarily.

Perhaps you wanted to show her that your requirement is genuine and that you would have shown up for work otherwise. She kind of showed you that it wasn't and that you won't get any credit for trying to act nice.

I'm sorry if I sound rude. It's just my point of view on the situation.

she is, but don't sweat it. just put in your time IN WRITING, IN DETAIL (include the time), in future so there's no misunderstanding.

At first, neither of you were being an asshole. But then you were.

Its possible your manager forgot you told her. But its also likely from the sounds of it like you either forgot or were unaware that you had to take half days in the full morning or afternoon as your boss told you.

From what you've said here, she didn't lecture you. She merely gave you information and asked you to remember the rule for next time. Thats not a lecture.

But the way you're describing it here, insinuating that she could be an asshole, make you look like the bad one.
