Question:
Major college/life problem?

I thought about radiology, then I discovered that they have to be in the room with their patients at times and the walls don't entirely protect from the radiation which got me worried. Then I tried engineering, which, just today I had to walk out of my graphics class because I could not visualize 3D objects in my head from 3 2d shapes on paper. It just didn't seem possible for the shapes to connect, I felt like the 'special' student the entire time I also wasn't the least interested in engineering, the opposite, actually. For the past year 8 of the 9 classes i've taken I have gotten 4.0's in and to have to turn in a BLANK quiz was too embarassing. I didn't want him to make a comment during class so I just slipped out.

My interests are in writing, although I know I cannot make money off of it. And when I get home, I don't know how my parents are going to react. I cannot pay for college alone, but I feel so rushed I can't find a career that I can make money off of, and have job security and have openings. I'm also not a very outgoing person due to a previous stuttering problem. It's gone now, but I'm so quiet because back then I didn't bother talking so, advertising won't be good for me.

I would have too much problems making connections which is key. Somebody please give me advice, because everything is starting to fall apart in my life.

.....Dear Mandark, I understand your frustration. You really should try to find something in an area that you enjoy, which in your case seems to be writing. I think I have to disagree with you about not being able to find a good paying job in that field. With the way a lot of students write today, if you can write well, there might, indeed, be a place for you out there. I think you should go talk to someone at the school of journalism if there is one at your school. If there isn't one, then go to a school that has one and talk to them about it. I also did a quick search for careers in writing and there are quite a few. How about going to this website and checking them out:

From reading your question, you write pretty well. Best of luck. :-)

My advice... if you study what you're interested in and not what you think is going to make you the most money, the career path will come on it's own. What you study in college isn't as important as what you learn... the best students learn a lot more than what they study. It's the skills that can be applied to real-world situations that you pick up in college that are important. Not so much the facts and formulas you memorize.

There are a lot of people who have a degree in one field and work in a completely unrelated field (Hell, I have a bachelor's degree in geology and work professionally - and quite happily, I might add - as a web developer).

I agree with Spalding. After reading your well crafted posting, there is definitely a career for you somewhere. Do you like writing stories? You may want to look into being a novelist or screen writer. Do you like writing about current events? There is still a need for news writers. Do you like doing research and then summarizing that information? Business need analysts.
