Question:
My Parents Don't Like Me Reading!?
Mrs. Crosby 87!

Mom and dad arent together... but no matter which house I'm at I always get riddiculed at because of reading too much or because of what I'm reading! Right now I'm reading New Moon by Stephanie Meyer and dad laughed because he saw the cover (a rose).

All that I read is age-appropriate and I learn a lot... so what's wrong here!?!?

Please help I love reading...!

Nothing is wrong with reading. Reading is a place where you can be anything, do anything, go anyplace you want. It is a place for learning. Just read the right books, and treasure your books.

If your parents feel threatened that you may know more than them, don't talk about what you read, keep it to yourself, or talk with a friend who doesn't belittle you. Keep a diary, I loved to write in my diary when I was growing up. I read constantly, now my children read all the time. It is much better than television and it has no advertisments. Keep reading.

You are completely normal. Don't let them worry you too much. Reading is a good thing as long as it's not affecting your social skills (like you don't ever have contact with other people and all you do is read and sleep all day). And they shouldn't judge a book by its cover... a picture of a rose could mean the book is about a million different topics!

They are WRONG...you need to keep reading whatever you like, no matter what they say or laugh about. You are learning. Reading is the best way to educate yourself and learn about everything! Tell them that if they read a little bit more when they were younger they would probably still be together as a family and they wouldn't make fun of your level of intelligence!!

I love reading and it's probably because my mom pushed me so much to read...she used to read to me at night about different topics. She made it fun and that's probably why I like reading now. But yeah, reading makes you SMART!

For starters... New Moon is an AWESOME book! The next one (Eclipse) comes out August 7.

My parents were the same way when I was younger. They punished me by taking away my library card and making me go outside. I hated it.

There is NOTHING wrong with a love of reading. I pursued it in college and now have a BA in English. Although I don't use that degree in my job, it was well worth it to get the degree because I'm so passionate about books.

Don't let anyone - parents, friends, strangers - take your passion away. Your passions fuel your identity, and without them, we are nothing.

Hey I love reading too. I can't understand why your parents would ridicule you for reading you would think they would be happy you're doing something constructive instead of playing video games or watching TV. Just keep doing what you're doing nothing is wrong with it you're brain is like a sponge the more you read the more you will learn.

Maybe where you are bouncing back and forth they want your attention more? I don't know I am guessing. KEEP READING, you learn alot from books and as long as you are reading age appropriate material they should be proud of you for doing so. Also remind them that reading helps keep people from getting alzheimers when they are older so suggest you make a trip to the library with them.

Are you ignoring your family or responsibilities because of your reading? Are you sure they are serious and not playing with you? My father teased me relentlessly when I was growing up about my reading. At first it really hurt my feelings but later I realized his teasing came out of his own insecurity. He never finished school and only had a 6th grade reading level. He was actually intimidated by my intelligence.

Do your best to interact with your family but don't stop reading because it is the least expensive vacation you can take!!!!!

I can not believe your parents feel that way about reading. I and my kid's dad always encouraged our kids to read and my daughter expertly enjoys reading. Maybe they think the more time U spend in the book is less with them, especially when u r being bounced from one house to the other.

Just ignore them. Or say that you should be proud that I can actually pick up a book and read it. I get teased at work because I have almost a different book everyday. Don't sweat the small stuff. Enjoy yourself. Those who don't read don't understand those that do.

Nothing is wrong with reading a lot, as long as you have time with your friends and family. Reading is way better for you that TV and video games. Then next time they say something to you you could say what would you rather me be out smoking week, and partying. lol. See how they react to that. Let them know that it bothers you that they make fun of you for it they may just stop.

My parents used to take my books away after an hour's reading time. Try to ignore the comments as best as you can (it will take practice).

I love reading as well. I think it will make you an educated, well-rounded person who is able to discuss a variety of topics. Keep on reading, it can only help in your future.

Obviously your parents haven't got a clue as to who you are, and what reading can do for you. Ignore them. This is probably the one time I will ever say to ignore your parents. You're better off reading then going out acting like a dumb hoochie, and getting caught up in boys. Keep readin girl!

their is absolutely nothing wrong with reading.maybe you should let your mom & dad know in a respectful way that maybe if they did more reading themselves, they just might still be together.you learn alot when you read, even how to love someone the right way for life. don't stop reading you will know much more when you reach your parents age.GOOD LUCK

You should never stop something you love doing, especially if that something is reading. The next time your mother or father laughs when they see you reading ask them what do they find so funny about what you're reading. Explain to them that you love reading and you are learning from it. Hopefully they'll understand. Gooood luck! (:

OMG what in the world is wrong with your parents? Your parents must truly be one in a million to not want you to read books!!!! I agree with some of the other people on here when I say to keep reading--never stop....don't pay attention to the criticism!!!

Keep on reading, no matter what. When my children were younger, I always encouraged them to read. I can't understand why they would give you a hard time about it.

Can your parents read? If not, then maybe there's some jealousy going on here.

They SHOULD be very proud of you.

I would try to tell them both- sit down with them either at dinner or ask them to have a heart to heart with you. Tell each of them that you love to read, you are learning alot from it and you don't understand why they are not allowing it. That both of them (parents in each house) are ridiculing you for it and no matter where you are, you can't get any piece over it. Tell them that it is a good habit, you are not doing anything wrong and that you could be a couch potato not learning anything at all. Ask them to please stop teasing you about it and that it really hurts your feelings.

Reading is very good and can make you smart. Not saying your not. Every parent should encourage their children to read because of the percentage of teens that don't.

Ignore the ridicule.. Enjoy the book. Ask them if they would rather have you out riding around with gang bangers or reading and improving your vocabulary and your mind.

Reading is wonderful. Just make sure you spend time with each of your parents and not just reading. Maybe they feel left out that you're not talking with them.
2007-07-16 14:38:49 UTC
Keep on reading! Don't let your parents bother you. Reading broadens your mind and enriches your soul! I like to read only non-fiction books. Just keep reading!

Get a removable bookcover so they can't see what you're reading, and tell them your teachers told you that you had to read as much as possible over the summer.

they probably would prefer you read something educational. i get that, but reading is reading and how can you go wrong with exercising your brain. my sons reads comics, but i mix it up with regular books. just hide the books you like inside of the books they want you to read.

Normally I tell people to listen to thier parents, but in this case I have to side with you. Reading is the best way to learn and to expand your vocabulary and creativity. I can't think of anything better to do with your lesiure time.

This is one area I can feel good about telling someone to ignore their parents. Reading is a fine way to spend your time, so go ahead and continue if you enjoy it.

Are they objecting to you reading books in general or are they objecting to your choice of books?

If they don't like you reading in general, ignore them! And shame on them for not encouraging it and putting it down!
