i'm a 19 year old college student. i graduated high school with a 4.3 GPA and was 6th in my class. Now that I am in college I still make great grades.
However, I am also a huge music fan and will pretty much listen or read any book on musicians. My parents aren't music fans so they think I'm weird for liking people like David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Marilyn Manson and Alice Cooper. They think they are depraved and that i'm seemingly an evil child lol for liking them. You should have seen their faces when i bought Marilyn's autobiography. It was like i had brought the depths of hell into our living room. Granted i dont agree with everything Marilyn says but i find him to be an extremely intelligent man and gifted artist. i dont find him to be evil at all lol but my parents are still freaked out by it. They say it all started with me liking Bowie and it's corrupting me lol. however, i have never done anything to promote their thinking and it makes me feel like a freak whenever i'm around them. is there something wrong w/me for liking music and artists like the ones i do?

It's easy for parents to fear for they children if they like people hwo don't exactly dress up in a socially acceptable manner!!!

I love the Rammstein, their music is all about porn, they sound very racist, maschilist, they have even been associated with Nazism.

I love them for that, I love their extreme lyrics, they say things that to some degrees we all think but not in such an exagerated way. I believe they, in their real life are not nazi, are not maschilits, are not racist. in fact the members all have a family or a partner at least. I am sure they have many friends that are not German or with a different colour skin.

The point of this is, you don't necessarily are what you say you are or they way you present yourself to the world! And some people do not understand this, even many people of our age do not understand this.

Yes try and sit down with them and tell them that all you like is these people's music and art and tis doean't mean that it is in your intention to get in to drugs or wera white contacts, and if you do at a party, make sure you get rid of them before you come back home:-)

Your parents are very lucky people to be able to worry about your taste in music and not about your school grades, whether you are taking drugs/drinking alcohol/staying out all night/getting in fights etc. What a luxury!

Unfortunately, there are parents who cannot tolerate it when their children have tastes or ideals that differ from their own. That is not your problem, it is theirs. The fact that they are not music fans is no reason for them to condemn the fact that you are. The artists you have listed are widely accepted to be great musicians. While I perhaps wouldn't flaunt Marilyn Mason around - yes I have read interviews with him and i know he is intelligent and well educated but he does look like your friendly neighbourhood satanist to the uninitiated - I would otherwise do my best to ignore your parents if I were you and avoid outright confrontations. You are doing nothing wrong.

My daughter has a group of friends who are avid Heavy Metal fans. The music they listen to gives me a headache but that is none of my business. They are nice, reliable and polite young people and good friends to my daughter. You're 19 and if you still live at home you will have to make allowances for the fact that your parents don't like your music (headphones), but otherwise, just live your life and move out when possible.

there is nothing wrong with you. with parents are just reading to far into your interests. maybe try sitting down with them and explain why you like to read these things about the ones they think are evil. im sure if you told them you disagree with some things but you find their stories interesting they may be more understanding. sometimes people find it difficult to understand that you may like someones art without completly agreeing with what that person stands for. I like a few artists that are terrible people, it does make their art any worse for that and their terrible personalities often show in their art which i think is interesting.

side note, how did you have a more than perfect GPA?
