Traditionally, My husband, the 3 kids, and I have split Easter Sunday amongst our family. My side usually goes to the park around noon, has a picnic, and all of the kids hunt for eggs, etc. We try to do it early because a relative works in the afternoon. We usually go over to his parent's house in the afternoon and have dinner and stay the entire evening. This year things have changed. My husband's sister and her husband decided to go on a trip and have my In-laws watch their daughter for a week. After their trip they fly in Easter Sunday at 6am, plan to stay a little during the day, and then all of them have to be at the airport by 5pm to go back home. My MIL isn't planning anything Easter-related for the day. It's just a simple lunch and visiting. The kids will probably be bored and watching TV in the back room. They live in an active adult community and it's all rocks and desert plants. There's not an outside area to play in. MIL doesn't want it combined. What do we do?

Where to go on a holiday always seems to end up in a fight in many homes. I personally would keep tradition. Your children are looking forward to being with their family in the park and doing all the fun things they do every year. It may sound cold, but it is not your fault that your in laws have decided to change things this year. The only thing I can suggest is that if the two families live close together, then go to your in laws early in the morning and then go to with your family. The main thing to remember in any holiday, is that it is about the kids! They look forward to these days all year long, so do what you know wil be more memorable and holiday related for your children.

Do not change anything! Go to the park and have the traditional picnic and if any family member or friend wish to join you, the more the better! Why? Because things changes towards the end, and they may not take the trip, but if they do. Spend time with your husband and three kids at the park, and have the BEST easter egg hunt ever! Before you eat, remind your kids of the day in which we all Christians celebrate the resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ!

God Bless

I would tell your in-laws what your plans are with the kids and that you will be taking them to the Easter events and your husband and go and spend time with the sister and brother in-laws until they leave, then your husband can either meet up with you at the Easter events or spend the time with his parents. Or even better, invite the in-laws to the Easter event and they all can ride together and enjoy the grand kids with you and your family. That why they are called families. God Bless and Good Luck.

Start your own tradition, start having Easter dinner(or cook out) at your place. You could invite family &/or friends for your annual dinner & egghunt. Or make different plans every year, nothing says you are suppose to do the same thing everytime.

Why don't you let choose your "sides of family" who wants to spend Eastern Sunday with your family, at your place ....?

Because

You are a family, too aren't you ? You want to have the egg-hunt for you kids, an eastern lunch !!! The tradition....the atmosphere for your family (husband and children), for yourself !!!

Just go to your MIL, have that simple lunch and leave. Watching TV isn't Easter-related thus you have good reason to take your leave.

You can do both. Have a meal with the in laws then keep the best for last, that way the kids have something to look forward to!

Alternate year to year or visit just the closest relatives. Make it a visiting day.
